Orrin Tietz and Mary Everson wanted a program for treating addictions where clients feel welcome and have a sense of dignity, so they developed an independent clinic and named it “Club Recovery.” The primary approach to treatment is cognitive behavioral, that is, helping people change to make their lives better. Since mental health issues often accompany addiction, mental health services are available. Club Recovery was incorporated in September of 1998.
The first therapy room was at 5200 West 73rd Street, Edina. Since this room soon proved too small, the program was moved across the hall to a larger room in the same building. By October of 2000 the program had again outgrown its space and was moved to 6550 York Avenue South, Edina.
In September, 2004, the facility was expanded to accommodate additional programming and more clients. At the same time the entire facility was redecorated to provide a bright and pleasant place for clients to meet.
Prior to Club Recovery, Orrin and Mary worked together at Walker Cityview, a long-term care facility, where they licensed and operated an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program within a nursing facility. The concept was a new one that addressed an old problem, namely that nearly 20% of all nursing home admissions everywhere are chemically dependent but have no services available to them. This program was the first of its kind in the state of Minnesota.
Mary Everson received her Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Minnesota in 1995.She completed her Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certification as well as Advanced Clinical Studies in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at the University of Minnesota. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Councilor. She has worked as a chemical health counselor at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis.
Orrin Tietz has 10 years of experience as an ordained pastor and more than 20 years of experience in long-term care facilities. While in long-term care he developed support programs for chemically dependent persons at Valleyview Health Care Center, Jordan, Minnesota, and Walker Cityview Health Care Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. For many years he published a regular newsletter for health care professionals about chemical dependency and the older adult.
